Types of Ideas in Product Design

IDEA : a thought or suggestion as to a possible course of action.

Whenever we start something new, there arises a question always that what is the idea behind this? So today I will be explaining this topic in a very deep.

Although there are a number of words, a number of definitions explaining the main moto of an idea. An example of an idea is a chef coming up with a new menu item Something, such as a thought or conception, that is the product of mental activity. Sometimes an idea could be certain or uncertain but mostly certain, Like “I had an idea how to proceed, but I wasn’t confident that I could do it”.

Why do we need an Idea?

The idea is something that goes parallel with the opinion because they ultimately shape each other. The idea comes from reading, reading the other’s opinion via books or any text or anything. We can't form our own conclusions if we don’t read about other ideas out there. you can't make progress, you can't bring the change and that’s where your human development stops immediately.

This is why having an idea is extremely crucial.

From where to get the idea?- you can’nt have ideas until or unless they are realised or actionised and you cannt action anything without the initial idea.

How to set up an idea?

1. Consider and analyze the relevant markets.
2. Note down your ideas and expand them.
3. Carry out competitive analysis.
4. Model your business.
5. Create, design, sketch your mockup and then test it.
6. Execute a market survey.
7. Develop your final product.
8. Gathering customer feedback and measuring your business results.

Simplify

with this type of idea, we make things much easier for the user to perform a particular action or to do a particular job/task. For Example, Instagram introduced a layout, a new app that lets you easily combine multiple photos into a single image. It’s fun, it’s simple and it gives you a new way to flex your creativity. When you open Layout, you automatically get the previews of custom layouts as you choose photos from your camera roll.

Me Too

Takes current idea in the market and often implements the idea in a way that is either better than the rest of the alternatives in the market or in a way that resolves unaddressed problems for the user. “Me Too” ideas often take market share away from incumbents(existing competitors) in the market. Flip kart uses this idea of product designing.

Virtualize

It involves moving activity to an online space. Means paying taxes, bills or similar transaction using your phones, laptops, tablets. In short, the amount of actions users take virtually comes under this category of the idea.

Remix

This type of idea involves the mixing of two or more ideas that gives birth to another idea. One great example of this is “Slack”- It is a platform for team communication: everything in one place, instantly searchable, and is available wherever you go.

Mission almost Impossible:

This is a type of idea which is quite hard to implement and seems almost impossible. One such example for this is “Project Loon”- Project loon balloons float in the stratosphere, twice as high as airplanes and the weather. This enables telecommunication companies to share the cellular spectrum of the balloon network directly with users' phones. The project aims to reach the Internet to the village areas.
